The following generations were all born and bred on\u00a0West Jawa.<\/p>\n<p>Two men were destined to join up, although they never physically met; Kik Arri\u00ebns and Jurjen de Jong, son of a Royal Marine Officer and Pharmacologist, assigned by the Dutch Government set up pharmacies on West and Mid-Jawa. Jurjen was born in Sukabumi, where the building is still being used as a pharmacy \u201dApotik Gedeh\u201d \u00a0and is now owned by Kimia Pharma.<\/p>\n<p>Kik married a descendant of the Sultan of Surakarta and remained in\u00a0Indonesia\u00a0until 1951, working on Bali, Flores and\u00a0Lombok. Jurjen was sent to the\u00a0Netherlands\u00a0to study pharmacy, but his real interest was in Chemistry, so secretly he went to Delft TU, where he met Hatta. Later on, in the course of events he met Soekarno in Bandung. As his father insisted that Jurjen would focus on pharmacology, he was forced to go to\u00a0Leiden\u00a0University, where he became the assistant of Professor van Itali and completed his studies there.<\/p>\n<p>After the 2nd\u00a0World War he returned to\u00a0Indonesia\u00a0and married my mother and I was born in\u00a0Jakarta\u00a0on the 14th\u00a0January 1956.<\/p>\n<p>The two men may or may not have met in\u00a0Indonesia, but there were three very important things they had in common;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Their great commitment and love for\u00a0Indonesia\u00a0and the need for their own independence,<\/li>\n<li>Their vision regarding the obligation one needs to fulfill in caring, sharing for and with those who have not been as fortunate to have a stable background,<\/li>\n<li>They both fathered daughters whom they raised with the same ideals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;2_5,3_5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/lombokecoprojects.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Christiane-Arriens.jpg&#8221; align_tablet=&#8221;center&#8221; align_phone=&#8221;&#8221; align_last_edited=&#8221;on|desktop&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.23&#8243;][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;3_5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.27.4&#8243; text_font=&#8221;|700|||||||&#8221; text_font_size=&#8221;24px&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Leading up to the establishment of Foundation Kebon Sepatu NL*<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.27.4&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The two daughters became very close friends and when I visited Christiane in\u00a0Thailand\u00a0in 2004 she encouraged and supported me to keep the promise I made to my mother and visit\u00a0Indonesia\u00a0for the first time since 1957, when my parents had decided to return to the\u00a0Netherlands. Jurjen, my father had passed on in 2000 and my mother was very ill. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Before I left her in the\u00a0Netherlands, she had asked me to visit Sukabumi and\u00a0Bandung\u00a0to retrieve soil from their birth ground, to mingle with the ashes of my father and herself once she would also die. I left my children with Christiane and her husband and started my journey to the past with fear in my heart. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">What would I find? Memories returned to me when I was a child sitting on my father\u2019s knee and his stories of long forgotten times, full of homesickness and yearning for a land he felt he had deserted in time of need. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Gatherings at my parents\u2019 house, rooms filled with aunts and uncles sharing the same experiences and history, but always stories filled with a certain sadness and longing, particularly when they recalled the tastes of various fruits, ingredients and spices, at that time impossible to get in the toko\u2019s already established in the\u00a0Netherlands. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">When I saw the first atolls of the\u00a0Jawa\u00a0Sea, I wondered how I was going to cope with all these emotions. But when I arrived at the customs office, a very serious and stern looking officer examined my passport, finally looked up at me and smiled: \u201cwelcome home!\u201d, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.1&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.1&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><span>As\u00a0Christiane and I decided to establish the Stichting Kebon Sepatu in honour of our fathers and will continue their hopes and dreams for\u00a0Indonesia\u00a0and the Indonesian people with our whole heart and passion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column_inner][\/et_pb_row_inner][et_pb_row_inner column_structure=&#8221;1_2,1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.1&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.1&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>who has supported the Mission and Vision right from the start &#8211; for this we cannot thank him enough and\u00a0 for me personally, he is not only a friend but also a most trusted advisor.<\/p>\n<p>The Board of Directors in the Netherlands and in Indonesia, together with the operational project team on Lombok assist the Foundation Kebon Sepatu and their counterpart Yayasan Kebon Sepatu in\u00a0 putting all their talents, expertise and experience toward the well-being of the people of\u00a0Indonesia.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column_inner][\/et_pb_row_inner][et_pb_row_inner column_structure=&#8221;1_2,1_2&#8243; text_font=&#8221;|300|on||||||&#8221; text_font_size=&#8221;10px&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>*) The name of the Hibiscus knows several translations in different dialects.\u00a0The most commonly used is Kembang Sepatu or Bunga Sepatu.\u00a0Literally translated this means \u201cShoe-flower\u201d.\u00a0The reason for its name is because the shoe-shines in the street used the fresh flowers to polish up the Shoes of their customers.\u00a0The Foundation aims to realize projects, in the same pragmatic way the shoe-shines on Java apply the use of the flower.\u00a0For\u00a0this reason, the Foundation decided upon a symbolic interpretation; a beautiful gathering place for\u00a0a diversity of projects, that lead to the same goal.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column_inner][\/et_pb_row_inner][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243;
